Have you ever wished that you could imitate Mark Zuckerberg’s success? I did (a little).

Who can say that they’ve owned their very own social network? I can! In 2012, I launched a unique niche social network for LGBT youth. Along the way, we experienced unexpected outages, design and infrastructure changes, overwhelming amounts of traffic, and even the odd server crashing.

I am also proud of the fact that I developed a mobile application for this website, which in early 2013, became available on the Android and iOS app stores. Over the four years of owning this site, I have re-branded twice, going from “The Gay Youth Book” (The GYBook) to “Gaybook” in 2013 and back again to its original name, in 2015.

I eventually closed the website down on Christmas Eve 2016, with a total of 4019 members from 103 countries!

I found the whole experience hard work, expensive and time consuming but very rewarding. Along the way, I have met a lot of nice young people, from all walks of life. I am proud that I was able to offer them an online safe haven, where they’d be free from discrimination and homophobia.
