Have you ever wished that you could imitate Mark Zuckerberg's success? I did (a little).
Who can say that they've owned their very own social network? I can!
On May 19th 2012, I founded a unique niche - a social networking site called The Gay Youth Book (The GYBook). A cool hang out and safe community for the LGBT youth community.
In my spare time, I did a lot of promotional and marketing work, using Facebook and Google ad services, so that I could get as many people as possible to join. It worked.
Suddenly, the site is bombarded with thousands of people all at once, wanting to sign up. This caused our servers to immediately crash.
Due to the fact, that this website contained a lot of young and vulnerable people, all members had to be screened before they were allowed access into the community.
As a precaution, SSL encryption was enforced. This offered our current and future members the reassurance they needed, to prove that the website was secure, safe, cohesive and their personal data was encrypted.
In 2013, I created and launched a mobile application, which was eventually available on the iOS and Android stores, free of charge.
The site was permanently closed on Christmas Eve 2016, with a total of 4019 members from 103 countries!
I found the whole experience hard work, expensive and time consuming but very rewarding. Along the way, I have met a lot of nice young people, from all walks of life.
